Fontechiara is a boutique winery located in the Northeast area of Piedmont. We produce high quality red wines, that are faithful expressions of our land as they are made with native local grapes like the famous Nebbiolo, the reknown Ghemme, the ancient Vespolina, the “rare” Bonarda, the popular Barbera , the best kept secrets like Croatina DOC, Fara DOC, Sizzano DOC, and Spanna DOC
All our wines are DOC and some of them, like the Ghemme, has the higher Italian classification, DOCG. We offer a complete portfolio of fine Piedmontese wines with different characteristics and prices.
Our winery is located in Borgomanero, a small village on the hills near Novara. Our vineyards are planted in the foothills of the Alps. Within a few kilometres of our hills, at 350
metres above sea level, you’ll find two beautiful lakes, Lago Maggiore, with the famous town of Stresa, and Lago
d’Orta. Their favorable influence on the local microclimate, paired with a good terrain, makes our area perfect for the production of high quality, fine wines.
Fontechiara is a green estate. Though we are not "certified" organic, our vineyards are farmed with natural methods and using some of the biodynamics tecniques. We strongly believe that making wine from grapes grown without recourse to synthetic chemicals is better both for the planet and for the wine drinker because all these things can damage the soil and the plant, and can end up in the wine as residues.
In our area you will also discover archeological finds of Celtic civilization. It is know that the population of this particular period was dedicated to the agriculture and the cultivation of the vineyards. It is said that the ancient Romans, during their empire’s expansion, knew of the grape harvest which occurred in late autumn, with the first fog. They had called this wine “Nebbiolo”, from the Italian word “nebbia” for fog. The literary great Plinio also wrote about this wine, “Nibiolae” (in Latin), ancient evidence of the cultivation of this region’s vineyards.
